Bahubali, also known as the Great Wall of China, is one of the most beautiful temples in south India. Built in 1537 A.D. by Tuluva king Vishnuvardhana, it is located on the slopes of the Western Ghats at an altitude of around 605 meters. The temple was named after a Brahmin astrologer who according to legend predicted that King Dharmaraja Yuddhamalla would rule for thirty years and live in peace and prosperity for thirty more years, after which he would renounce his earthly possessions and retire from worldly life. The king took this prediction seriously and made provisions after the end of his rule to leave his kingdom to his queen. The Bahubali statue is a monolithic, rock cut image of Gommateshwara, a form of Lord Buddha, created by the chieftain-turned-monk Bhootayana. The statue is 55 feet tall, making it one of the tallest monolithic statues in the world. The sculpture was created from a single block of granite measuring about 15 feet by 10 feet by 9 feet high. The first phase of construction lasted from 1427 to 1447 A.D., with some extensions continuing until 1508 A.D. The Valley Temple was built at this time. In 1469, a second phase of construction began, which is sometimes known as the "White Monastery" period. In 1485, a third phase started with the building of the "Big Temple Complex". The third phase continued for over 50 years. In 1537 A.D., the Vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya undertook another renovation in memory of his father Narasimha Deva Raya with a grant from the Vijayanagara Queen, Rudramadevi. The last phase of building work was completed in 1541 A.D. and was inaugurated by the Vijayanagara king Achyuta Raya. Construction of the temple ended with the death of Rudramadevi in 1564 A.D., and subsequently it became a private temple until 1760 A.D., when it was converted into a Bijaya Temple - a memorial to the last king of Vijayanagara, Bijayaraja I (1658-1689). The Bahubali statue, which was created between 1427 and 1447, is reportedly part of an old funeral procession and is said to be 1,920 years old. The temple consists of a series of shrines. The main shrine is built around a stepped pyramid with a mausoleum on top. The mausoleum is accessed through the main shrine, which sits in the centre of three other buildings. These buildings are themselves octagonal; one set at each corner. The Bahubali statue itself sits in the central shrine, which sits below an elevated platform for circumambulation around it. There are four pillars that surround this platform; the one closest to the side doors has information about "Puranic" legend behind its creation; it states that Bhootayana was born as Shankaradeva, who lived during the renovation of Bahubali Temple. cfa1e77820
